Maine Bass Fishing in October – China Lake Maine

Now that the open water fishing season has been extended from October 1st to the end of December here in Central Maine, I’ve been taking advantage of it. I haven’t fished a whole lot this summer but I’m making up for it now. I’ve never fished in October before but I’m loving it.

China Lake is about 2 miles down the road from my house so I’ve been fishing off the shore and public boat landing the past few days and have caught some really nice Maine Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass.

I’ve been fishing in the evenings but today I just got back from my first early outing. I arrived at 6am, it was still dark and pretty cold with frost on the ground. 33 degrees. My fingers went numb a few times but it was nice once the sun started to come up.

Flat calm water and the bass were just exploding on my topwater Heddon Torpedo lure. Here are some of my trophy bass pictures… Enjoy! ;-)

Cartoon Vampire Drawing

Here’s a quick concept drawing of a vampire character I’m working on for my clipart store. Halloween is just around the corner so I thought I’d better start early adding a few holiday images. I actually only drew half of this guy, the old fashioned way using pencil & paper, and imported it into Photoshop by scanning. I then copied the half, pasted it and flipped it horizontally to make the drawing symmetrical. Enjoy!

I’m happy to announce that a long time favorite of mine, master Illustrator and character designer Peter De Seve has started blogging!

I actually had an idea for a blog post a while back that would have been titled: “5 Illustrators I Wish Were Blogging” and Peter De Seve was at the top of that list. He’s just one of those artists that I can never get enough of. I want a new post from him EVERY DAY. :-)

Maybe I should pretend that I’m like Peter De Seve with fans who want me to post everyday…

Just When I Thought GoComics was Starting to “Get It” with RSS

I logged into gocomics.com the other day and noticed that they are now providing RSS feeds for each comic individually… GREAT! I though this was awesome and they were starting to finally “get” the whole RSS/web 2.0 thing. But lo and behold, when I check my feeds this morning, this is what I see…

Notice anything missing? Yea, the actual comic! When you subscribe all you get is the date and some nice greedy-looking Google ads in the content. I thought I signed up for comic cartoon delivery, not an advertisement delivery. This is pretty darned sucky of them.

Does anyone know where I can get comic RSS feeds that have the actual comic in the feed? Thanks.

I enjoyed this little Adobe Illustrator drawing tutorial by marciolcastro over at YouTube. I found his shading technique in particular quite interesting. I’m not sure I have the patience to do all that layering though. :-)

Don’t Be a Tooler! by Von Glitschka

Here’s a great little write-up on “Toolers” by Von Glitschka over at his blog: Art Backwash. What’s a Tooler you ask? A Tooler is basically a self-proclaimed creative professional with little to no skill and/or talent who relies heavily on computer tools to create art & design. A polite way to say “Hack.” :-) In Von’s own words…

A Tooler however dwells in the realm of "Marginally Bad" and only enters "Good" by accident or by deriving or copying another persons work. Because of this modus operandi and the current trend with prefab design methods, our industry has legions of zombie designers that choose to feed off the corpse of incurious creativity.

And I loved this paragraph on creativity…

Creativity is all about exploring. If you don't fail, that means you're not trying hard enough. Some however seem to think a process shouldn't involve any risk? When sharing a process like my tutorial there is a mindset that thinks it should enable everyone to do it via some method that doesn't require any learned skill, just the knowledge of what to click next. I'd call that creative communism, red art if you will.

It’s an entertaining read and it would be even more entertaining if it wasn’t so painfully accurate. Good comment discussion as well. Go check it out and see what I mean. And if you aren’t already subscribed to his blog, do yourself a favor and sign up, he’s one of the Greats to watch in this field.
