I logged into gocomics.com the other day and noticed that they are now providing RSS feeds for each comic individually… GREAT! I though this was awesome and they were starting to finally “get” the whole RSS/web 2.0 thing. But lo and behold, when I check my feeds this morning, this is what I see…

Notice anything missing? Yea, the actual comic! When you subscribe all you get is the date and some nice greedy-looking Google ads in the content. I thought I signed up for comic cartoon delivery, not an advertisement delivery. This is pretty darned sucky of them.

Does anyone know where I can get comic RSS feeds that have the actual comic in the feed? Thanks.

What’s a Tooler you ask? A Tooler is basically a self-proclaimed creative professional with little to no skill and/or talent who relies heavily on computer tools to create art & design. A polite way to say “Hack.” :-) In Von’s own words…

A Tooler however dwells in the realm of "Marginally Bad" and only enters "Good" by accident or by deriving or copying another persons work. Because of this modus operandi and the current trend with prefab design methods, our industry has legions of zombie designers that choose to feed off the corpse of incurious creativity.

And I loved this paragraph on creativity…

Creativity is all about exploring. If you don't fail, that means you're not trying hard enough. Some however seem to think a process shouldn't involve any risk? When sharing a process like my tutorial there is a mindset that thinks it should enable everyone to do it via some method that doesn't require any learned skill, just the knowledge of what to click next. I'd call that creative communism, red art if you will.

It’s an entertaining read and it would be even more entertaining if it wasn’t so painfully accurate. Good comment discussion as well. Go check it out and see what I mean. And if you aren’t already subscribed to his blog, do yourself a favor and sign up, he’s one of the Greats to watch in this field.

Call me crazy, but your Twitter icon can and WILL keep me from following you on Twitter. Below are my top 5 gripes about Twitter images and why they'll drive me, and probably many others, away.

If you have the ugly brown default icon that Twitter uses as a placeholder, I won't follow you. If you use this it makes me think you're not active and I like to follow active people.

If your Twitter icon is a mini advertisement for your MLM or Dating Service conpany, I will not follow. This just screams that you'll be trying to sell me something at some point and that your primary motivation for being on Twitter is to make money. Pass.

If your Twitter icon is flipping me the bird I probably will not follow you. I get enough of that when I drive my car, I don't really want it in my twitter client. It's not cute, it's actually pretty stupid and immature. FYI

If your Twitter icon makes you look angry or like a douchebag, I will not follow you. I'm not in this for negative vibes, baby.

If your twitter picture is of nude or risque body parts, male or female, I'll definitely pass. I suppose there's a place for that on the internet for certain people... Twitter is not that place in my opinion.

BONUS GRIPE: Animated Twitter icons may seem like a cool and hip thing, but they get old very quickly and I really don't want to keep being distracted by your dancing banana when I'm trying to read tweets around you. Don't try to steal attention away from others. Tweet awesome tweets and you won't have to resort to such lame tactics.

There, I said it. It feels good to get that off my chest. Do you have a nice & respectable Twitter avatar? I'm @Fitzillo on Twitter. Follow me here and I'll be sure to return the favor! :-)

I-Ming's latest blog post is a good one and has me thinking that there are basically 3 types of people online:

those that consume

those that move existing things around

those that create

Number 1 and 2 combined outnumber 3 immensely I think. Sure, you might be a combination of 2 or more of the above, but what is it that you do more of? Consume, Move or Create? Not enough people are creating stuff. Too many are just moving other people's stuff around. What have you created lately? (link to it in the comments!)

Here's an excerpt from I-Ming's 1 Second Creation post:

HOW TO CREATE ANYTHING
1. START BY DREAMING. Create it in the Spiritual, imaginative places. Form it in your mind.
2. Simply usher it into reality like a doctor would a fully formed baby.

Read the entire post here, and be sure to follow him on twitter... he's one of the fun ones :)

Thoughts?

Mark W. Lewis has written a great article on the Top 10 Lies told to Beginning Artists and Designers. I think I've heard a variation of every single one. Below is the list... be sure to visit his original article where he goes into more detail on each item.

...

"Do this one cheap (or free) and we'll make it up on the next one."

"We never pay a cent until we see the final product."

"Do this for us and you'll get great exposure! The jobs will just pour in!"

On looking at sketches or concepts: "Well, we aren't sure if we want to use you yet, but leave your material here so I can talk to my partner/investor/wife/clergy."

"Well, the job isn't CANCELLED, just delayed. Keep the account open and we'll continue in a month or two."

"Contract? We don't need no stinking contact! Aren't we friends?"

"Send me a bill after the work goes to press."

"The last guy did it for XXX dollars."

"Our budget is XXX dollars, firm.

"We are having financial problems. Give us the work, we'll make some money and then we'll pay you."

...
All of the above are huge red flags so if you experience any or all, don't walk away.... RUN.

Thanks Mark.

Most agreed, thinking that it would spare their jobs — but then layoffs came a week later. They were "pretty pissed" over the bait-and-switch and were forced to find jobs outside their industry. The text of the noncompete is below.

8. Covenant Regarding Competition. I agree that for a period of one (1) year after my employment with the Company terminates, I shall not (a) engage in any employment, business or activity that is competitive with the Company's businesses; or (b) solicit business from, do business with or render services to, in any capacity, directly or indirectly, any entity that is or was a Company client or customer within the last twelve months of my employment with the Company, for a purpose or in a manner that is in any way competitive with the Company's business. If, during or after my employment with the Company, I seek work elsewhere, I agree to provide a copy of this Agreement to any person or entities seeking to hire me before accepting employment with or engagement by any such person or entity.

9. Solicitation of Employees. I agree that for a period of twelve (12) months immediately following thetermination of my relationship with the Company for any reason, whether with or without cause, I shall not either directly or indirectly solicit, induce, recruit or encourage any of the Company's employees to leave their employment, or take away such employees, or attempt to solicit, induce, recruit, encourage or take away employees of the Company, either for myself or for any other person or entity.
