This is an interesting little controversy - I suppose it really depends on how one looks at it and how we want to use the image. If we're looking at it as a separate piece of art to place in a collection or something, then I can see where someone might value it at $15 or more. On the other hand, if I just need an image of a squirrel to put in a blog post somewhere, I really can't see myself paying $15 a pop for this.

But either way, as long as we have some semblance of a free market, you should be able to charge whatever you want for it, and if you can find enough buyers you can probably do pretty well.

You know what? I've just re-read this lady's post and I agree with her. You want to charge her how much for the squirrel drawing? Clearly she would be a fool to consider paying you (or the tattoo artist for that matter) when she can simply catch a squirrel of her own from the local park for free, strap it to her arm with strong rubber bands, and draw round it with a permanent marker.

Fitz, you should be ashamed of yourself.

I don't know what "unfreasonable" is, but I think it should enter the lexicon. Some of Dubya's made-up words should be introduced into the mainstream too. How about "unreasonablificationment"?

Daisy,

Do you know how to capitalize your name? Do you know that you should have used the version of the word "to" spelled "too" when saying "too expensive?" An ellipse uses three periods, not two (or is it "to" or "too"), and certainly not five. You might want to be careful about throwing the word "stupid" around in the future.

Brad is incredibly talented and his pricing is a bargain. I'm glad this "stupid" e-mail was published so people can become more enlightened about the true value of art. And, by the way, cartooning is one of the more difficult art forms to master.

What is more stupid, the e-mail she sent or you publishing it? You show right of the bat you are highly unprofessional here.....sorry dude..you just turned me off.....

(and FYI I agree with her complaint about the price, 15 dollars is way to expensive, there are numerous sites where you can get better designs for not even half of the money.....)

People can be so naive. I wonder what she "does for a living" because I bet she wouldn't give you her services for free. Maybe you'll see her in the McDonald's drive-thru and not only can you ask to see her way-cool squirrel tatoo, but maybe she'll up-size your fries for free!

I love your art. Wish more people could understand the talent behind the computer screen...

Lovely. The "actually work for a living" bit is priceless. I'll bet she isn't a big patron of her local art museum.

Seems to me that she is looking at your squirrel as a mass-produced retail product. Your "competition" in value is anything she can buy at Walmart for $15.

It is easy to see why "starving artist" is axiomatic, if not just redundant. :)

Heh. "I want to put your picture on my body permanently, and I love it so much it's worth exactly zero to me to be able to do that."

Wow. I hope she pays more than $15 for the tattoo. Unless it's done by a hack it'll cost 15-20 times the price you charge for the royalty-free, unlimited rights to the image. Something tells me this may be a teenage girl, one who's in for a bit of a rude awakening.
